The Pohlmann Suite

This great bedroom was the star attraction of our September 2007 auction.  It is an 1860 Rococo Victorian four piece bedroom set, signed M. Bros., fine figured and flame walnut, white marble top, 1) Half tester bed, 10' 10" tall, over queensize, 65"w x 82"l inside 2) armoire, 9'6" 3) dresser, 8'2" 4) washstand.

Provenance is remarkable- It descended in same family for four generations until now, from original owner, Herman Pohlmann, in New Orleans, a wholesale grocer (Pohlmann and Son) in downtown area, at Tchoupitouins, between Lafayette and Poydras. Original untouched finish, one small part of a carving missing on footboard. Shown above as it came through the door, not even polished or cleaned.

From the great-granddaughter of Herman comes this biographical note:

Herman Pohlmann (1825-Germany to 1902 New Orleans, La.) arrived in New Orleans 1846, was senior member of Pohlmann & Son, wholesale grocers on Tchoupitouins(between Lafayette & Poydras)  was original owner of bedroom suite.

Furniture was passed on to son Henry Pohlmann, Sr. (1865-1936) who moved to Pensacola, Fl. 1528 E. Brainard St.

Property inherited by Henry Pohlmann, Jr. father of consignor.

This clipping of Henry Sr., second owner of the furniture,
comes from the old T.T. Wentworth series "They Were Here" #10, 1967.
